When the Daughter is Pregnant: A Christian Parent's Guide to the News That No Parent in Sandton Wants
When the Daughter is Pregnant: A Christian Parent's Guide to the News That No Parent in Sandton Wants
The Scene
The mother in Sandton received the news on a Wednesday afternoon. The first emotion was not anger. It was fear. Fear for the daughter. Fear for the grandchild.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 — *"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."*
The South African Christian in the situations described above is not alone. The Bible has been speaking to these situations for two thousand years. The Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore has been hearing these passages read, discussed, and applied for ten years. What follows is a distillation of what the Bible says and what we have learned from the journey.
The First Response
Proverbs 31:8-9: 'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.' The daughter's first job is to defend her, not to condemn her.
Love Without Enabling, Firmness Without Rejection
The challenge is to hold two things at once. Love fiercely while setting clear boundaries. Support without enabling. Be firm without being harsh.
What About the Grandchild?
The grandchild is a gift. Psalm 127:3: 'Children are a heritage from the Lord.' The teenage mother and her baby are both invited into the family.
Practical Steps for the Family
Get professional medical care immediately. Have a family conversation. Seek pastoral counsel from someone who is wise. Include the father of the baby in the conversation if possible. Take one day at a time.
A Prayer for the Family in Shock
Father, we do not have the words for this prayer. We ask for the love that does not abandon. We ask for the wisdom that does not lecture. We ask for the faith to believe that this story is not over. Amen.
A Closing Prayer
Father, we bring this struggle to you. We ask for your wisdom, your strength, and your presence. We ask for the community to hold us. We ask for the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
