The Christian Grandparent in Johannesburg: Passing Faith to Grandchildren in 2026

There was a time, not very long ago, when the Christian grandparent in Johannesburg was not a difficult subject. The grandchildren came to granny's house on a Sunday afternoon. The grandchildren learned the Bible from granny's voice. The grandparent in 2026 is a different kind of ministry. The grandchildren live in Cape Town, in Durban, in London, in Sydney. The proximity has been replaced by a long road. The long road has not been given an exemption from the calling.

What the Bible Actually Says About the Older Christian

Titus 2:2-4 — teach the older men and women to teach the younger. Psalm 71:18 — Even when I am old and grey, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation. Proverbs 20:29 — grey hair the splendour of the righteous. Job 12:12 — Is not wisdom found among the aged? Deuteronomy 32:7 — Remember the days of long ago; consider the generations long past.

What the Bible Says About the Grandparent in Particular

2 Timothy 1:5 — I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 2 Timothy 3:14-15 — Timothy knew the Holy Scriptures from infancy. Psalm 78:4-7 — We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord. The faith moved from Lois to Eunice to Timothy. The Christian grandparent in Johannesburg in 2026 is Lois.

What the Grandparent in 2026 Is Up Against

The distance — Paul wrote letters from a prison cell; the grandparent can still write. The screens — 1 Corinthians 13:8, Love never fails. The small visits — 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. The different language — Acts 2:4, the Holy Spirit has always been about passing the prayer on in whatever language the heart speaks.

What the Bible Says About the Long Road

Hebrews 12:1 — let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Galatians 6:9 — at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Isaiah 46:4 — Even to your old age and grey hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. Psalm 92:14 — They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green. The grandparent is still bearing fruit. The fruit can be a phone call. The fruit can be a letter. The fruit can be a WhatsApp voice note.

Five Practices for the Christian Grandparent

Phone on Sunday afternoon. Send one psalm a week. Tell one story until the grandchild knows it. Pray for the grandchild by name. Show up on a Wednesday. The Christian grandparent who has begun the long road with a community has begun the long road in company. The seed is yours to plant. The growth is God's to give.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
