Helping Children Process Hard News Through the Bible: A South African Parent's Guide
There is a moment in many Sandton kitchens in 2026 when the news comes through the phone. The child is doing homework at the kitchen table. The parent is making supper. The phone lights up. The headline is a shooting, a hijacking, a story about a school somewhere in Gauteng. The child looks up. The child has been trained to look up. The child has been trained to ask. The parent has to decide in that moment what to say.
What the Bible Actually Says About Children
Genesis 1:27 — So God created mankind in his own image. Psalm 8:2 — Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold. Matthew 19:14 — Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Mark 10:15 — whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. The child is in the kingdom, not outside the kingdom waiting to be brought in.
What the Bible Says About the Hard News
Habakkuk 1:2-3 — How long, Lord, must I call for help? Psalm 74:3-4 — the enemy has destroyed the sanctuary. Lamentations 1:1-2 — the city once so full of people. Matthew 2:16-18 — Rachel weeping for her children. Luke 13:1-5 — Jesus on those who died in the tower of Siloam. The Bible is not naive about the hard news. The Bible sits with the hard news.
What the Bible Says About Walking with a Child Through the Hard News
Do not pretend the news is not there — Psalm 46:1-3, though the earth give way. Tell the truth in age-appropriate language — Proverbs 22:6, start the child on the way they should go. Bring the news to God together — Psalm 13:1-2, How long, Lord? Walk slowly — 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, the God of all comfort. Tell the child that the child is held — Psalm 139:7-12, Romans 8:38-39, neither death nor life can separate us from the love of God.
What the Hard News in Johannesburg Looks Like
The crime — Psalm 23:4, Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. The xenophobia — Leviticus 19:34, The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Galatians 3:28, you are all one in Christ Jesus. The weather — Matthew 6:25-26, look at the birds of the air. The country — Jeremiah 29:7, seek the peace of the city.
Five Practices for the Christian Parent
Read a psalm at bedtime. Pray the news with the child. Answer the question. Walk slowly. Show up on a Wednesday. The Christian parent who has begun to walk with the child through the hard news has begun the long work of the gospel in the heart of the child.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
