The Weekend the Seedlings Came Out

There is a weekend in October in Johannesburg when the seedlings come out. The Livingseeds, the Starke Ayres, the Garden Centre at Fourways, the nursery at Northcliff. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 has begun to think about the garden. The tomato seedlings go into the raised bed in the back garden. The basil goes into the pot by the back door. The marigolds go into the border along the wall. The lawn goes into the patch where the dogs have been.

The garden is real. The seeds are real. The watering can is real. The Christian who has begun to garden is the Christian who has begun to think about the spiritual life in a new way. The garden is a small picture of the soul. The garden is a small picture of the Bible's teaching about faith.

This post is for the Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden in 2026 — who has begun to plant tomatoes in October, who has begun to think about the watering, who has begun to wonder what the Bible actually says about seeds, about patience, about harvest.

What the Bible Actually Says About Planting

The Bible is a book about planting. The Bible begins with a garden that was Eden. The Bible ends with the tree of hope. In between, there are many gardens. The Bible treats planting as one of the great pictures of the spiritual life.

Genesis 1:11-12 — Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed plants on bare ground, and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds in them, according to their various kinds." And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seeds in them according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 2:8 — Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

Genesis 2:15 — The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and care for it.

Isaiah 55:10-11 — As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty.

Matthew 13:3-8 — Then he told three times. A farmer went out sowing seeds for the sowing. As he sowed them, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Some fell on rocky places, where they did not have much soil. They sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they did not have deep roots. Other seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seeds fell on good soil, where it produced a crop — a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

Galatians 6:7-9 — Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

2 Corinthians 9:6 — Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

The Bible treats planting as a normal part of the Christian life. The Bible treats the garden as a place where the Christian learns about the soul. The Bible treats the tomato seedling as a small picture of the Christian's faith. The Bible is real. The garden is real.

What the Joburg Spring Asks of the Gardener

The Joburg spring in October asks real things of the gardener. The soil has been cold through August and September. The frost has passed. The rain has been enough. The sun is coming. The gardener has to plant. The gardener has to water. The gardener has to weed. The gardener has to wait.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 — There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 — Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

Luke 12:54-56 — He said to the crowd: When it is evening, you say, "It will be fair weather, because the sky is red." And in the morning, "Today it will be stormy, because the sky is red and overcast." You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

The gardener who watches the frost will not plant. The gardener who watches the cloud will not reap. The gardener who knows the Joburg spring in 2026 knows that the time to plant is now. The gardener is the Christian who knows that the time to plant in the spiritual life is now.

What the Bible Says About Watering

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden has begun to think about watering. The Joburg spring needs water. The Joburg summer will need more water. The Christian who has begun to garden has begun to think about the watering of the spiritual life.

Isaiah 58:11 — The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

John 4:14 — But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. The water that I give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

John 7:38 — Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.

Ephesians 5:26 — To make her holy, the word washing her with the water through the word.

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden knows that the watering of the garden is a small picture of the watering of the soul. The Christian knows that the watering of the soul is the Bible, the prayer, the Bible study, the church. The Christian knows that the watering is real. The Christian knows that the water is real.

What the Bible Says About Patience

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden has begun to learn patience. The Joburg spring asks for patience. The seeds take weeks. The seedlings take months. The tomatoes take five months. The harvest comes late in the Joburg summer. The Christian who has begun to garden has begun to learn the patience that the Bible calls faith.

Habakkuk 2:3 — For the vision awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end in the future and will prove true. In the end it will come, but it will certainly come and will not delay.

James 5:7-8 — Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and the spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.

Hebrews 6:12 — We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Romans 8:25 — But if we hope for what we do not have, we wait for it patiently.

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden knows that the patience of the gardener is a small picture of the patience of faith. The Christian who has planted tomatoes in October knows that the harvest is in February. The Christian who has planted the Bible in the morning knows that the harvest is in years. The Christian who has planted the prayer in the evening knows that the harvest is in decades. The patience is real. The harvest is real.

What the Bible Says About the Harvest

The harvest is real. The Bible treats the harvest as a normal part of the Christian life. The Bible treats the harvest as one of the great pictures of the spiritual life.

Proverbs 3:9-10 — Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Galatians 6:8-9 — Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

James 3:18 — Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

Psalm 126:5-6 — Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out with a pure heart, like those who go out weeping, tend to scatter seed and do not return with joy until they reap.

John 4:35-36 — Don't you have a saying, 'It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

The harvest is real. The harvest is one of the great promises of the Bible. The Christian who has begun to garden in Sandton in 2026 has begun to understand the harvest. The Christian who has planted tomatoes in October knows that the harvest will come. The Christian who has planted the Bible in the morning knows that the harvest will come. The harvest is real.

What the Children Learn from the Seeds

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to garden with the children has begun to see the children learn from the seeds. The children watch the seedling come up. The children water the seedling. The children watch the tomato form. The children pick the tomato. The children eat the tomato.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 — These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Proverbs 22:6 — Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

The Christian parent can teach the children about seeds. The Christian parent can tell the children, The seed is small. The seedling is small. The harvest is big. The Bible is like the seed. The Bible study is like the seedling. The harvest of the Bible study is like the family. The teaching is honest. The garden is holy.

What the Christian in Sandton Has Started Doing With the Garden

In the last three Joburg springs, the Sandton Wednesday evening Bible study has begun to think about the garden. We do not cancel the Bible study for the garden. We do not change the topic to the garden. We do, however, change three things.

We begin the Bible study that Wednesday with a moment of thanksgiving for the spring. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 has had a spring. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 has had a garden. The moment of thanksgiving is real. The thanksgiving is real.

We read one of the planting passages from the Bible. We have read Matthew 13. We have read Isaiah 55. We have read Galatians 6. The Bible study is real. The Bible is real. The seeds are real.

We pray, at the close of that week's Bible study, for the gardens of the Bible study, for the children of the Bible study, for the seeds of the study. The prayer is real. The prayer is short. The prayer is for the harvest.

A Short Prayer for the Spring Garden

Father, you are the God of the seed. You are the God of the seedling. You are the God of the harvest. You are the God of the Joburg spring. You are the God of the tomato. You are the God of the basil. We thank you for the garden. We thank you for the seeds. We thank you for the children who learn from the seeds. Help us to be faithful planters. Help us to be patient waiters. We ask this in the name of the one who said, "I am the vine, you are the branches." Amen.

An Invitation

If you are a Christian in Johannesburg or Sandton who has begun to garden, or who has begun to think about the spring, or who has begun to wonder what the Bible says about planting, the Wednesday evening Bible study in Sandton is open to you. The Bible study begins at 7:30pm on Wednesday evenings. We meet at the Bible study room in Parkmore. The Bible is real. The garden is real. The harvest is real.

If you are a Christian who has also begun to garden with the children, or who is also a Christian from the suburbs north of Joburg who would like to start a Bible study in the garden, the Bible study is open to you. The Bible is real. The friendship is real. The garden is real.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.
