There is one hour in the day of the Christian in Sandton that belongs, technically, to the Christian. The hour is the lunch break. The hour is short. The hour is also the one hour in the day that the Christian can call their own. The Christian can decide to spend the lunch break in a way that the Bible would recognise as a practice of the presence of God.

What the Bible Actually Says About the Quiet Hour

Psalm 46:10 — Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 119:15, 97 — I will meditate on your precepts... It is my meditation all the day. Joshua 1:8 — meditate on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 — whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. The meditation does not have to be in the morning. The meditation can be in the middle of the day.

What the Bible Says About the Workplace

Colossians 3:23 — Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Colossians 3:17 — do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. 1 Corinthians 10:31 — do it all for the glory of God. Jeremiah 29:5-7 — Seek the peace and prosperity of the city. The lunch break is part of the workplace. The lunch break is also part of the vocation.

What the Bible Says About the Quiet Hour at Work

The quiet hour is not an escape — Ecclesiastes 3:1, a time for everything. The quiet hour is a practice — 1 Timothy 4:15, be diligent. The quiet hour is for the worker — Matthew 11:28-30, come to me all you who are weary. The quiet hour is not a hiding place — Luke 5:16, Mark 1:35, Jesus withdrew and returned. The quiet hour is a witness — Matthew 5:14-16, the light on the hill.

What the Lunch Break in Sandton Looks Like

The food court — Ecclesiastes 9:7, eat your food with gladness. The coffee shop — Mark 6:31, a quiet place and get some rest. The park — Genesis 1:11-12, the land produced vegetation. The office itself — Romans 1:16, I am not ashamed of the gospel.

Five Practices for the Christian in Sandton at Lunch

Pick one psalm a week. Bring the Bible to the office. Pray before the afternoon meeting. Walk to a quiet place. Show up on a Wednesday. The Christian who has begun to make the lunch break a quiet hour has begun the long work of the gospel in the office. The one hour in the day is yours. The Bible is ready.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
