The Week the Evenings Got Longer

There is a week every October in Johannesburg when the evenings get noticeably longer. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 leaves the office at 5:30 pm and notices that the sun is still up. The Christian drives home and notices that the jacarandas are still lit by the sun. The Christian eats supper at the patio at 6:45 pm and notices that the sun is still in the sky. The Christian reads at 7:05 pm and watches the sun finally set over the Magaliesberg.

The daylight in Joburg in October is a gift. The daylight in Joburg in October is a long grace. The Bible treats the long daylight as a picture of the long grace of God. The Christian in Sandton who has begun to think about the long daylight has begun to think about the long grace.

This post is for the Christian in Johannesburg or Sandton who has begun to notice the long evening — who has begun to wonder what the Bible says about light, about evening, about the wisdom of long evenings, about the wisdom of slow days.

What the Bible Actually Says About Light

The Bible is full of light. The Bible begins with the command, "Let there be light." The Bible ends with the city that has no need of sun because the glory of God is its light. In between, the Bible has many lights.

Genesis 1:3-5 — God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day.

Psalm 104:11-13 — He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. All the wild animals take turns drinking, the wild donkeys come to drink. Birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches.

John 1:4-9 — In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came as a witness to testify to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

John 8:12 — When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Revelation 22:5 — There will be no more night. They will not need the light and will not need the sun, for the Lord God Almighty will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.

The Bible treats the light as a gift of God. The Bible is clear. The light is real. The gift is real.

What the Bible Says About the Evening

The evening is also a Bible picture. The evening is the time of the day when the work has been done. The evening is the time when the family gathers. The evening is the time when the prayer is said.

Genesis 5:8 — And there was evening, and there was morning — the second day, and the third day, and the fourth day, and the sixth day. The pattern of the Bible is morning and evening, the day and the night, the work and the rest.

Psalm 30:5 — For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may endure for a moment, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Psalm 65:8 — Those who live in the east, at the ends of the earth, are filled with awe at your wonderful deeds. Where glimmers of grace come at the evening, where the morning rejoicing comes at the morning.

Luke 24:29-31 — They begged him, "Stay with us, for the evening is approaching." As they sat at the table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him.

Acts 16:15 — When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.

The Bible treats the evening as a gift of God. The Bible treats the evening as a time when the Christian rests. The Bible is clear. The evening is real. The rest is real.

What the Bible Says About the Long Evening

The long evening in Joburg in October is a small picture of the long grace of God. The Christian in Sandton who has begun to think about the long evening has begun to think about the long grace.

Psalm 30:5 — For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may endure for a moment, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

2 Peter 3:9 — The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:15 — Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

The Bible treats the long grace as one of the great truths. The Christian who has begun to think about the long evening has begun to think about the long grace. The Christian is real. The grace is real.

What the Christian in Sandton Has Started Doing With the Long Evening

In the last three Joburg october long evenings, the Sandton Wednesday evening Bible study has begun to think about the long evening. We do not cancel the Bible study for the long evening. We do not change the topic to the long evening. We do, however, change three things.

We begin the Bible study that Wednesday with a moment of thanksgiving for the long daylight. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 has had a long daylight. The Christian in Sandton in 2026 has had a long evening. The moment of thanksgiving is real.

We read one of the evening passages from the Bible. We have read Psalm 30. We have read Luke 24. We have read Acts 16. The Bible is real. The evening is real.

We pray, at the close of that week's Bible study, for the family, for the evening, for the work of the Bible study. The prayer is real. The prayer is short. The prayer is for the long evening.

What the Bible Says About the Wisdom of Slow Days

The Christian in Sandton in 2026 who has begun to think about the long evening has begun to think about the wisdom of slow days. The Bible is clear about the wisdom of slow days.

Psalm 46:10 — He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

Ecclesiastes 3:1 — There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Psalm 90:12 — Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Habakkuk 2:20 — The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to think about the long evening has begun to think about the wisdom of slow days. The Christian knows that the long evening is a gift. The Christian knows that the slow days are a gift. The Christian knows that the wisdom is real.

What the Bible Says About the DST (Daylight Savings Time)

The Christian in Sandton in 2026 who has begun to think about the long evening has begun to think about the DST. The DST in South Africa was abolished in 2024, but the question remains: what is the right thing to do with the long evening?

1 Corinthians 10:23 — "I have the right to do anything," you say — but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything" — but not everything is constructive.

Romans 14:5-6 — One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord.

The Christian in Sandton who has begun to think about the DST has begun to think about the long evening. The Christian knows that the long evening is a gift. The Christian knows that the Bible is clear.

What the Children Learn From the Long Evening

The Christian in Sandton who has children is teaching the children about the long evening. The children are playing in the garden at 6:30 pm. The children are watching the sunset at 6:55 pm. The children are eating supper at 7:15 pm. The children are saying the prayer at 7:30 pm.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 — These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Proverbs 22:6 — Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

The Christian parent can teach the children about the long evening. The parent can tell the children, The long evening is a gift from God. The long evening is a time to pray. Use the long evening to pray. Use the long evening to read. Use the long evening to teach. The teaching is honest. The long evening is holy.

A Short Prayer for the Long Evening

Father, you are the God of the light. You are the God of the evening. You are the God of the long evening. You are the God of the slow days. We thank you for the long daylight. We thank you for the long evening. We thank you for the wisdom of slow days. Help us to use the long evening well. Help us to teach the children about the long evening. We ask this in the name of the one who said, "I am the light of the world." Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
