Living with the Uncertainties of Johannesburg: A South African Christian Reflection on the Peace That Does Not Depend on the News

There is a particular kind of alert that lives in the body of every Christian in Johannesburg. It is not panic. It is not fear. It is a low-grade attentiveness to the city, a quiet scanning of the environment, a posture that has been trained by years of living in a place where the news can change in an afternoon.

You check the load-shedding schedule before you make the coffee. You check the traffic before you get in the car. You check the news before you open the WhatsApp group. You check the children before they leave the house. You check the locks before you sleep. Johannesburg is a city of small uncertainties that add up to a large weight.

What the Bible Actually Says About Anxiety

Philippians 4:6-7 — Do not be anxious about anything... And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Matthew 6:25-26 — Look at the birds of the air... your heavenly Father feeds them. Matthew 6:31-34 — seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. 1 Peter 5:7 — Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. John 14:27 — Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Isaiah 26:3 — You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast. Psalm 55:22 — Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you. Romans 8:28, 31 — in all things God works for the good... If God is for us, who can be against us?

The Difference Between the Peace of the World and the Peace of Jesus

The world offers peace as the absence of trouble. Jesus offers peace that is not contingent on the news. It is contingent only on the character of God, on the cross, and on the resurrection. John 14:27 — my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. The Christian who has discovered the difference has begun the long work of the gospel.

Why the Christian in Johannesburg Struggles with This

The news is loud — Psalm 46:1-3, 10, Be still, and know that I am God. The losses are real — John 16:33, In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. The Christian often carries the burden alone — Galatians 6:2, 5, both true: carry each other's burdens, and each one should carry their own load.

Five Practices for the Christian Who Wants Peace in Johannesburg

Pray the news. Read Philippians 4 slowly. Find one person to be still with. Cast one specific anxiety. Show up on a Wednesday. The Christian who shows up on a Wednesday in Sandton has begun the long work of peace. The Wednesday evening is a small island of stillness in the middle of the city.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
