Being a Christian in the Sandton Office: A Guide to the Faith in the Corporate Workplace

The Scene

The Christian in the Sandton office has a problem. The client wants the contract signed before the due diligence is done. The manager wants the numbers adjusted. The colleague is taking credit.

1 Peter 4:10 — *"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."*

The South African Christian in the situations described above is not alone. The Bible has been speaking to these situations for two thousand years. The Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore has been hearing these passages read, discussed, and applied for ten years. What follows is a distillation of what the Bible says and what we have learned from the journey.

The Bible at Work

Colossians 3:23-24: 'Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.' The corporate job is ministry. The office is the mission field.

Integrity in the Workplace

The most powerful witness in the Sandton office is not the morning devotional email. It is the honest person who does not cut corners, does not blame others, and does not play politics. Proverbs 11:3: 'The integrity of the upright guides them.'

Handling Ethical Pressure

The Christian will face pressure to compromise. Ephesians 5:11: 'Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness.' Know where the line is and do not cross it.

Practical Workplace Habits

Keep a Bible on the desk. Pray before the difficult meeting. Build one genuine friendship at work. Find a way to serve colleagues. Be honest about your faith when asked.

A Prayer for the Monday Morning

Father, we go into the office with you. Give us integrity when the pressure is on. Give us courage when the compromise is expected. Make the Sandton office a small place of your kingdom. Amen.

A Closing Prayer

Father, we bring this struggle to you. We ask for your wisdom, your strength, and your presence. We ask for the community to hold us. We ask for the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
