The Grandparent Who Has Lost the Grandchild: A South African Christian's Guide to the Unspoken Grief

The Scene

The grandchild died at three months. The funeral was small. The family has moved on. The grandparent in Alberton has returned to the Wednesday Bible study but has not said a word in six months.

Psalm 34:18 — *"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."*

The South African Christian in the situations described above is not alone. The Bible has been speaking to these situations for two thousand years. The Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore has been hearing these passages read, discussed, and applied for ten years. What follows is a distillation of what the Bible says and what we have learned from the journey.

The Grief That Has No Name

The Bible does not rank grief. The Bible says: 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted' (Matthew 5:4). The mourning is valid. The comfort will come.

What the Bible Says About Loss

The Bible is the book of grief. 'How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?' (Psalm 13:1). The grieving Christian is a Christian who is holding faith while everything else has been taken away.

Walking with the Grieving Grandparent

What the grieving grandparent needs to hear is: 'I am here. I am not going anywhere. Tell me about them.'

Practical Ways to Support the Grieving Grandparent

Name the grandchild. Remember the anniversaries. Do not try to fix the grief. Invite the grandparent to share a memory. Keep praying.

A Prayer for the Grandparent Who Has Lost a Grandchild

Father, we bring the grief that has no name. Hold the grandchild close to you. Hold the grandparent close to us. Amen.

A Closing Prayer

Father, we bring this struggle to you. We ask for your wisdom, your strength, and your presence. We ask for the community to hold us. We ask for the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
