When Trust Has Been Quietly Withdrawn: A Christian Reflection on Truth, Honesty, and the Long Work of Being a Person of Your Word in South Africa
It did not happen all at once. There was no single morning when South Africans decided to stop trusting each other. There was a series of small withdrawals, spread across a decade, that have added up to something we now call the trust crisis.
The plumber who said he would come on Tuesday and came on Friday. The contractor who quoted one price and billed another. The mechanic who said the part was original. The colleague who said they would send the document and did not. The cousin who said they would return the money on payday and did not. The politician who said something on Sunday and did something else on Monday.
What the Bible Actually Says About Truth
Exodus 20:16 — You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour. Leviticus 19:11 — Do not lie. Do not deceive one another. Psalm 15:1-2 — who speaks the truth from their heart. Proverbs 12:22 — The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. Proverbs 19:5 — A false witness will not go unpunished. Zechariah 8:16-17 — Speak the truth to each other... I hate all this, declares the Lord. Ephesians 4:25 — put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour. Colossians 3:9-10 — Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self. John 8:32 — the truth will set you free. John 14:6 — I am the way and the truth and the life.
What the Bible Says About the Person Whose Word Can Be Trusted
Proverbs 20:6 — Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? Proverbs 28:20 — A faithful person will be richly blessed. 1 Corinthians 4:2 — those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. Luke 16:10 — Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. Galatians 5:22-23 — the fruit of the Spirit is... faithfulness. The Christian in Johannesburg is not called to be famous. The Christian is called to be faithful.
Why This Is Hard for the Christian in Johannesburg
The system often rewards the opposite — Psalm 73:2-3, 25-26, the psalm of the person who has noticed that the wicked prosper. The family sometimes expects the opposite — Psalm 51:6, 10, 17, the prayer of a person who has stopped performing. The Christian often does not know how to begin — the Christian who has decided to be a person of their word has begun a long work. The work is rewarded over a lifetime.
Five Practices for the Christian Who Wants to Be a Person of Their Word
Keep one promise this week. Admit one thing you got wrong. Stop the exaggeration. Read Proverbs 12 slowly. Find one person to be honest with. The Christian who has one honest relationship is in a different position than the Christian who has none.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
