Winter Funerals in South Africa: A Christian's Guide to Grief, Presence, and the Long Walk Through Loss

I am writing this post in July, in the middle of the South African funeral season. Every June, July, and August, the funeral homes in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria are at full capacity. For the Christian in South Africa, the funeral season is one of the most demanding pastoral seasons of the year.

Why Winter in South Africa Is the Funeral Season

The Cold

The Highveld can drop below zero at night. Pneumonia, flu, and the complications of chronic illness all peak in the winter months.

The Calendar

Most South African families have traditionally buried their dead on Saturdays.

The Way South Africans Grieve

South Africans grieve communally. The funeral is not a private event. It is a public one.

What the Bible Actually Says About Grief

Psalm 23:4 — "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil"

It does not promise that the valley will not come. It promises that you will not walk through it alone.

Psalm 88 — The Psalm That Ends in Darkness

Psalm 88 is the biblical permission to grieve without resolving. Some winters do not end in spring.

Romans 8:26 — "The Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express"

The Spirit is already praying for you. You do not have to find the words.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 — The Resurrection of the Dead

The Christian is allowed to grieve. The Christian is also allowed to hope. The two go together.

John 11:35 — "Jesus wept"

The shortest verse in the Bible is the verse about presence.

What to Do When Someone You Know Has Lost Someone

Show Up at the Viewing, Even If You Did Not Know the Person Well

Bring something small. A bottle of juice. A packet of rusks.

Show Up at the Funeral, Even If You Have to Take the Day Off

Dress appropriately. Stay for the whole service. Do not check your watch.

Show Up in the Week After

The Christian who shows up in the week after is doing the most Christian thing possible.

Do Not Say the Wrong Things

"I am sorry." "I am here." "I do not have words." "Tell me about them."

Send the Family Something After the Funeral

A meal delivered three weeks after the funeral is more meaningful than the biggest flower arrangement.

Pray for the Family in the Long Term

The Christian who keeps the names on the prayer list for a year, or two years, is doing the long, slow work of Christian presence.

A Short Pastoral Note for the Bible Study Leader

Once a quarter, set aside the last fifteen minutes of the Bible study to remember the people in your community who have lost someone in the last three months.

A Winter Prayer for the Grieving

God of the cold months — we pray for the families who have lost someone this winter. We do not ask that you would explain. We do not ask that you would fix. We ask that you would stay.

Johannesburg Bible Study Church meets online every Wednesday at 7:30pm. If you are grieving this winter and would like someone to pray with, call +27 77 487 1295 or +27 67 442 4461.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
