Bible Study in Sandton

Free Bible Study in Sandton: Wednesday Evenings, Open to Anyone

If you live in Sandton, Parkmore, Benmore, Hyde Park, or anywhere in northern Joburg, and you have been looking for a free Bible study that does not feel like a lecture, this is it. We meet every Wednesday at 7:30pm on Google Meet. We have been running this since 2014. Everyone is welcome — including people who have never opened a Bible.

At a glance:

  • 📖 When: Every Wednesday, 7:30pm to 9:00pm
  • 💻 Where: Google Meet (link sent when you join)
  • 💰 Cost: Free, no strings
  • 👤 Who: Anyone. No church background required.
  • 🌍 Language: English (with occasional Korean for visiting friends)

Who We Are

We are Johannesburg Bible Study Church — a small, interdenominational Christian community that has been meeting in and around Sandton for over a decade. We are not affiliated with any specific denomination. We are not part of a larger church network. We are a community of believers (and seekers) who meet weekly to study the Bible, support one another, and try to live out what we read.

Mr. Sim and Ms. Dora lead the Wednesday study. Mr. Sim handles most of the teaching. Ms. Dora runs the Korean class on Sundays and joins the Wednesday Bible study when she is in town. They have been doing this together since 2017.

What a Wednesday Evening Looks Like

Each Wednesday follows a similar rhythm:

  1. 7:30pm — Settle in. People join the Google Meet from laptops, phones, and the occasional tablet. We wait 5 minutes for latecomers.
  2. 7:35pm — Catch-up. Optional check-in. How was your week? Anyone travelling? Anyone sick? We keep this to 10 minutes.
  3. 7:45pm — Reading the passage. We pick a passage on Monday and share it via WhatsApp during the week. Tonight we are reading Exodus 14.
  4. 7:50pm — Teaching. Mr. Sim gives a 15-20 minute walkthrough. Historical context, original language notes (Hebrew / Greek), how it connects to the rest of Scripture.
  5. 8:10pm — Discussion. Anyone can ask a question. Anyone can share a thought. There are no stupid questions. We have had nuclear physicists and first-time Bible readers in the same conversation.
  6. 8:50pm — Prayer requests. Anyone can share a request. We pray together. You can opt out — no pressure.
  7. 9:00pm — Done. Most people stay on the Meet for another 10-15 minutes just chatting.

What We Have Studied Recently

We work through books of the Bible over several weeks. Recent series:

  • Exodus — The Way Out (Jan–Mar 2026): Israel's escape from Egypt, the wilderness, and what "salvation" actually means.
  • The Gospel of John (Mar–May 2026): Who is Jesus, according to John's account?
  • Psalms for Real Life (May–Jun 2026): How the Psalms speak to anxiety, joy, grief, and ordinary Mondays.
  • Parables Jesus Actually Told (Jun–Aug 2026): The Lost Sheep, the Prodigal Son, the Workers in the Vineyard, the Unmerciful Servant.

Why "Free" Matters

We do not charge. We do not pass a collection plate. We do not run a paid membership programme. The Bible study is supported by people who already attend and who give voluntarily when they can. Some give R50 a month. Some give nothing. That is fine.

We believe the gospel is free, and the study of Scripture should be too. If you are between jobs, if you are a student, if you are a single parent, if you are just exploring — you are welcome. The Zoom link costs you nothing but 90 minutes of your evening.

Common Questions from First-Timers

Do I need a Bible?

No. We share the passage via WhatsApp before each session. Most people use a phone Bible app during the study (YouVersion is popular).

Will I be asked to share my video?

No. About half the group joins with video on, half with video off. Both are fine.

What if I have never read the Bible?

Perfect. You are exactly the kind of person we want in the room. We explain context, define terms, and never assume prior knowledge.

Is this a Bible study or a church service?

It is a Bible study. There is no worship band, no altar call, no offering. Just Scripture, discussion, and prayer.

What if I am not a Christian?

Come anyway. We have had Buddhists, agnostics, and curious atheists join over the years. We will not try to convert you. We will read the text together and let it speak.

Joined the Wednesday Exodus 14 study from Randburg. The pace and openness of the questions surprised me — there is no performance pressure, just people working through the text. Looking forward to next week.

  2. David K.

    Parkmore

    ·

I had not opened a Bible since school. The second Wednesday I asked a question about Exodus I had been sitting with for a month. Mr. Sim treated it like the most important question in the room. That is why I keep coming back.

  3. Sarah P.

Online via Google Meet works for me — I am in and out of meetings until late. The structure (read, ask, discuss, pray) keeps the hour focused. I have recommended it to two colleagues already.

Thanks Sarah. The structure is intentional — it lets the quieter people in the room also get a turn. See you Wednesday.

Two things I appreciate: (1) no pressure to share video, and (2) the questions at the end are real, not Sunday-school level. This is the first Bible study where I have done the homework.
