Online Bible Study in Johannesburg: Why a Wednesday on Google Meet Beats Sandton Traffic

Let us be honest. Getting from Randburg to Sandton at 7pm on a Wednesday is a 45-minute affair if the M1 is cooperating. Most weeks it is not. This is exactly why our Bible study has been online since 2017 — long before it was fashionable — and why it works. Here is what an online Wednesday looks like, and why most of our regulars would not go back to in-person.

The Joburg Traffic Problem (and Why Online Solves It)

Johannesburg traffic is the city's least charming feature. If you live in Roodepoort, Fourways, or Midrand and drive into Sandton for a 7:30pm meeting, you are committing to two hours of your evening — 45 minutes each way plus the session itself. By the time you get home, it is past 10pm. You have missed dinner with your family, you have not read to your kids, and you are too tired to do the homework. We have lived this. We do not recommend it.

An online Bible study removes that friction entirely. You make coffee. You open your laptop. You log into the Google Meet. You are in the room. The cost is 90 minutes, not three hours. You can do it in your pyjamas if you want — half our regulars do.

What You Need to Join

Almost nothing:

  • A device with a screen (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop)
  • An internet connection that can handle video (most Joburg fibre or 4G can)
  • The Google Meet link (we send it via WhatsApp when you register)
  • Optional: a Bible app on your phone (YouVersion, Bible Gateway, or Blue Letter Bible are all free)

That is it. You do not need to install anything. You do not need an account. You do not need to register on a website. Just click the link at 7:30pm on Wednesday.

Why Online Bible Study Actually Works Better

We were sceptical at first. Would people really participate through a screen? Would the discussion feel forced? After eight years of running this, here is what we have learned:

1. People talk more, not less

Counterintuitively, the online format makes quieter people more willing to speak. There is no physical intimidation of sitting in a circle with 12 strangers. People turn on video or keep it off — either way, they type in the chat or unmute and ask the question they were afraid to ask in person. We have had people share deeply personal things online that they would never have said face-to-face.

2. The geography becomes irrelevant

Our group currently includes people from Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Centurion, Pretoria East, and one person who has been joining from Cape Town since 2022. When you remove the geography constraint, you get a more interesting, more diverse group. And the diversity makes the Bible study richer.

3. You can rewatch

We record the teaching portion of every session (with permission) and send it out. Missed a Wednesday because of a work trip? Watch it Saturday morning with your coffee.

4. You can invite people easily

"Hey, want to join my Bible study? Here is a Google Meet link" is a much easier ask than "Hey, want to come to church with me on Sunday?" Many of our current regulars came because a friend forwarded them a Meet link with the message: "Just try once, you can leave anytime."

What to Expect on Your First Wednesday

First-time visitors get a 5-minute welcome from Mr. Sim or Ms. Dora. We briefly explain what we are studying and how the session will flow. Then we dive in. There is no awkward "Hi, I'm new, tell me your testimony" moment. We just read the passage and start talking about it.

If you prefer to keep your camera off for the first session, that is completely fine. We have had people show up for three weeks with no video before they turned it on. Take your time.

Common Concerns (and Honest Answers)

I am not a Christian. Is this still for me?

Yes. We have had Buddhists, agnostics, and people who just enjoy discussing ancient texts. We will not pressure you to convert. We will read the Bible together and let the text speak.

Will I be forced to share prayer requests?

No. Prayer requests are opt-in. You can listen to others pray without sharing anything.

What if I do not understand the Bible at all?

Perfect. We design the study for people who do not understand it. That is the whole point.

Is it really free?

Yes. Free. No collection plate. No upgrade tier. No paid newsletter. Just a Google Meet link and 90 minutes of your evening.
