Why Fourways Is on Our Radar

Fourways is one of the fastest-growing parts of northern Johannesburg. New families are moving in all the time, often from elsewhere in South Africa or from abroad. Lonehill, Beverley, Craigavon, Sunninghill, and the new builds around Waterfall are full of people looking for community. Many of them are looking for a Bible study that is not stuffy, not performative, and not Sunday-morning-only.

That is exactly what we have been trying to build for ten years. Our Wednesday evening online group is the centre of it. People join from their homes after the kids are in bed, from their studies, or even from the lounge after a braai. It is the easiest way for Fourways residents to find a serious Bible study without driving anywhere on a work night.

The Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Wednesdays, 7:30pm to 9:00pm, on Google Meet. We open in prayer, read a passage, and discuss. The group has about a dozen to two dozen regulars from across Johannesburg — Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, Fourways, Midrand, and Centurion.

The Bible study is unhurried. We take four to five weeks on each chapter, and we ask slow questions like "what did you notice", "what did you disagree with", "what would this look like on a Tuesday morning in Lonehill". Scepticism is welcome. There is no test, no quiz, no expectation of prior knowledge.

Who Joins from Fourways

We have a steady contingent from Fourways proper, plus regulars from Lonehill, Beverley, Sunninghill, Craigavon, and the edges of Bryanston. A few drive in from the new estates around Waterfall and from Kyalami, which is technically Midrand but right on the border.

The Fourways crowd is the youngest slice of our community. Many are in their late twenties to early forties, with young kids. Several are first-time Bible study attendees who came along because a friend invited them and stayed because they liked the tone. About a third of the Fourways group are not from a Christian background — they came out of curiosity and have stayed for the community.

In-Person Options in Parkmore

For Fourways residents who want to meet in person, our main hub is at Parkmore, 11th Street, Sandton. Off-peak driving time is 15 to 20 minutes from most Fourways suburbs. Peak traffic can stretch it to 30 to 40 minutes, which is why most of our Fourways members prefer the Wednesday online session.

Two in-person programmes happen at Parkmore:

  • Free Korean Class — Sundays at 2:00pm. About 90 minutes. Beginners welcome.
  • First Saturday In-Person Bible Study — once a month, first Saturday, 4:00pm. Smaller, more conversational than the Wednesday group.

UseCan Youth Programme for Fourways Teens

Our youth programme, UseCan, runs on Saturdays at 3:00pm in Parkmore. It is open to teenagers aged 13 to 18 from anywhere in Johannesburg — we have a number of Fourways, Lonehill, and Bryanston teens in the programme. The drive is about 20 minutes from Lonehill, 25 from Beverley. The cost is free.
