Why Roodepoort Is on Our Radar
Roodepoort is one of the more churched parts of the West Rand. Weltevredenpark, Constantia Kloof, Florida, and Little Falls are full of people who grew up in NG, Hervormde, or Methodist congregations. Many of them are now in their thirties and forties, with kids of their own, and the small conversational Bible study they grew up with has either disappeared or morphed into something bigger and more performative.
Our Wednesday evening group is built to fill that gap. It is small, conversational, online, and free. People from Roodepoort join from their lounges or studies at 7:30pm, log out by 9:00pm, and have not had to drive anywhere. Over the last few years, we have picked up a steady Roodepoort contingent — about a dozen regulars from across the area.
The Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Wednesdays, 7:30pm to 9:00pm, on Google Meet. We open in prayer, read a passage, and discuss. The group has about a dozen to two dozen regulars from across Johannesburg.
The Bible study is unhurried. We take four to five weeks on each chapter. The tone is conversational. The expectation is honesty, not expertise. Scepticism is welcome.
Who Joins from Roodepoort
We have regulars from Roodepoort proper (the central area around Ontdekkers Road), Weltevredenpark, Constantia Kloof, Florida, Radiokop, Little Falls, and the edges near Krugersdorp. We also have a few from Strubensvallei and Allen's Nek.
Demographically, the Roodepoort group is mostly in their thirties to fifties. About a third are Afrikaans-speaking and we accommodate that — Bible translations in Afrikaans are always available. Many are coming back to faith after a long gap and are looking for something gentle, not heavy.
In-Person Options in Parkmore
For Roodepoort residents who want to meet in person, our main hub is at Parkmore, 11th Street, Sandton. Off-peak driving time is 25 to 35 minutes from most Roodepoort suburbs. Peak traffic can stretch it to 45 minutes, which is why most of our Roodepoort members prefer the Wednesday online session.
Two in-person programmes run at Parkmore:
- Free Korean Class — Sundays at 2:00pm. About 90 minutes. Beginners welcome.
- First Saturday In-Person Bible Study — once a month, first Saturday, 4:00pm. Smaller, more conversational than the Wednesday group.
