Bible Study in Soweto: A Free Wednesday Group for Residents of Soweto, Diepkloof, Orlando and Meadowlands
If you searched bible study soweto, you know that Soweto has many large, lively churches — the kind with choir robes and four-hour services and a real sense of community. What it has less of is a small, midweek, conversational Bible study that meets online or in a quiet room. That is what we are trying to add.
This page covers:

Why Soweto Is on Our Radar
Soweto is one of the most churched parts of South Africa. There are dozens of large, vibrant congregations across the township — Methodist, Zionist, Baptist, Apostolic, Pentecostal, and more. People who grew up in those churches have a deep love for Scripture.
What some of them are also looking for is a smaller setting for midweek conversation. A place where the Bible can be read slowly and the questions can be honest. A place where you can disagree with the pastor and still be welcome. A place where the Wednesday is a meaningful part of the Christian rhythm, not just the warm-up act for Sunday.
That is what our Wednesday online group offers. We have a small but steady contingent of regulars from Soweto, mostly joining from Diepkloof, Meadowlands, Orlando, Pimville, and Protea Glen. They bring a depth of biblical literacy and a warmth that has shaped our whole group.
The Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Wednesdays, 7:30pm to 9:00pm, on Google Meet. We open in prayer, read a passage, and discuss. The group has about a dozen to two dozen regulars from across Johannesburg.
The Bible study is unhurried. We take four to five weeks on each chapter. The tone is conversational, not academic. The expectation is honesty, not expertise. Scepticism is welcome. So is enthusiasm.
Who Joins from Soweto
We have regulars from several Soweto areas: Diepkloof, Meadowlands, Orlando East, Orlando West, Pimville, Dobsonville, Protea Glen, and Jabulani. A few join from the southern parts of Soweto near Lenasia and Eldorado Park.
Demographically, the Soweto group spans a wide range. Some are in their twenties and early thirties, often students or early-career professionals. Others are in their fifties and sixties, often retired or semi-retired, often with deep church backgrounds. About half attend alongside their Sunday-morning congregation — Wednesday is an additional layer, not a replacement.
In-Person Options in Parkmore
For Soweto residents who want to meet in person, our main hub is at Parkmore, 11th Street, Sandton. Off-peak driving time is 30 to 45 minutes from most Soweto areas. Peak traffic can stretch it to 60 minutes or more, which is why most of our Soweto members prefer the Wednesday online session.
Two in-person programmes run at Parkmore:
- Free Korean Class — Sundays at 2:00pm. About 90 minutes. Beginners welcome.
- First Saturday In-Person Bible Study — once a month, first Saturday, 4:00pm. Smaller, more conversational than the Wednesday group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a Sunday service in Soweto?
No. We do not run a traditional Sunday service in Soweto. Soweto already has many strong churches — if you are looking for one to attend on Sunday, we can recommend a few that we know personally. Our in-person hub is in Parkmore, Sandton.
Will the group understand my context?
Yes. We have regulars from Soweto, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, and other southern Johannesburg areas. The group is intentional about being a diverse South African community, not a Sandton-centric one. We listen well.
Can I attend alongside my Sunday-morning church?
Absolutely. Most of our Soweto regulars also attend a Sunday service at their home congregation. Wednesday is meant to complement, not replace. There is no expectation that you change churches.
Is there a youth programme in Soweto?
Our youth programme (UseCan) runs in Parkmore, Sandton, on Saturdays at 3:00pm. Drive time is about 40 to 50 minutes from most Soweto areas. Some families make the drive; others wait until they can attend the Sunday Korean class together.
What Bible translation do you use?
Mostly NIV in English. Some regulars prefer KJV. Afrikaans and Zulu translations are available for those who want them.
The Honest Bottom Line
Soweto has many excellent churches. What it has less of is a small, midweek, conversational Bible study on the side. Our Wednesday online group is built for that person. Phone numbers: Mr. Sim +27 77 487 1295, Ms. Dora +27 67 442 4461. One sentence is enough.
